April, Round 2

5 Apr

We’re making sure this April is extra good with 2 shows! This doesn’t happen often.

bonesetters

On April 15th, we’re excited to host Bonesetters from Indianapolis. Self proclaimed surf-pop band whose most recent achievements include being listed in the Indianapolis Star as one of “Ten Indiana Bands You Should be Listening to Right Now”, and their song SAVAGES featured in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway announcement for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in 2016.

Local Springfield rockers Blind Social are finally back once again at the Radon Lounge. One thing that strikes us about this band is thinking about what it might be like if certain classic rock bands were starting today with today’s sensibilities, what might they sound like? Perhaps this is it. Plus judging from recent pictures, they have the hair to boot! Rumors are they’re working up some new songs, can’t wait to hear them at this show!

eric marvel
Also on the show is the long overdue appearance of Eric Marvel. Some longtime followers of Radon may remember a local electronic band Luzhin Defense. Eric is one half of that band, striking out on his own. Springfield is definitely heavy on americana and country but certainly light on electronic music, but if that’s what you’re after, then this is where you need to be.

Music, visual art and poetry is all present at this show. Speaking of poetry, we’re privelidged to be hearing some poems from Ian Winterbauer, who has even recently published his own book of poems.https://www.facebook.com/ianwritesbooks/

Our visual artist featured at this event is Jen Santarelli, aka Arty Farty Slumber Party. Jen’s artwork consists of geometrics, straight lines, and nifty buttons. Check out her art at this show and definitely visit her online store! Also the artwork for this show comes from one of her original paintings.

Springfield’s creative cooking project Copper Pot Cooking Studio will be bringing good home cooked food to share with everyone at the event. If you’re not familiar, Copper Pot provides cooking classes with folks of all ages here in Springfield.

So much to do in one event, just how we like it. Check out the facebook event at:

Big Indie show, Oct 1st

25 Sep

Real big quality indie show happening this Saturday, October 1st. Two tours are colliding in our basement. Cubits and The Mailboxes are roaming the states together. You may recognize a member of Cubits from Fairfield, IA as being none other than Mr Nasti himself. This is Nicholas’ latest setup with a really nice electronic wiz bang band. Since this is  a brand new band, there isn’t much recorded yet, but be prepared for something tasty and good. Here’s what’s out there so far.

It’s also nice having Tennessee band Mailboxes back with their Regina Spektor-ish vibes. Jillian has been busy writing new material and this band is certainly showing many emotional sides. We’re excited to have their energy back in the basement.

On tour from from the other direction is Chicago based band Campdogzz. This band appears to be on the move, and who knows where they’ll be going from here. We’re really excited to add them to an already stellar lineup. Although typically a duo, they are going all out with a 6 piece band, we expect it’s going to be ridiculously good. Of their list of bands that inspire them, Cat Power certainly stands out to us in their music. Check out their album, it’s been on rotation on our playlist for quite some time.

Skunkworks are the only local Springfield act on the lineup. We’re really excited about this band. They came out of nowhere this year and got the judges vote a the battle of the bands and have definitely caught our eye as the best new indie in town. If you like bands like Radiohead, Tame Impala, and Death Cab, then you’ll definitely want to catch this.

Also as an extra treat for this show, we’ll be serving breakfast cereal along with our usual coffee and free arcade. A show this sweet needs to go with a sweet bowl of cereal.

Get on the show and invite your friends! a show like this doesn’t come to town often

Horse Show 2016 Final Lineup Announcement!

14 May

I think we’ve teased out this Horse Show lineup for about as long as we possibly can. Today you get to finally find out about the last 4 bands playing Horse Show 2016!

610

First up, we’re really excited to bring 6’10 from Chicago. You probably can’t guess how tall the singer of this band is… 6’10 the acoustic project from the guys of famous celtic punk band Flatfoot 56. This band captures the energy of Flatfoot and presents it in a whole new/0ld way.

We’re also happy to bring along our favorite Springfield lofi garage rock band SAP. This band is composed of some of the mover shakers of the Black Sheep Cafe and led by the supernatural Clare Frachey. Check out their video from playing The Studio Show this year.

Also up for the Horse Show is new Springfield folk Sawhorse. Mid tempo folk blending a few different styles of country to include traditional flatpicking instruments with fingerpicking rhythms and pedal steel twang.

And last band to be announced Springfield’s top Guardians of the Galaxy inspired punk  band Starlorde. This supergroup includes members of several Springfield bands to form a band to save the universe.

That’s the last of the band announcements, you can see the whole list on the Horse Show page and the show poster coming out soon. Also check out the facebook event page.

Horse Show Lineup Announcement #1

23 Apr

Finally, we’re ready to start telling you who will be playing Horse Show 2016. We want to spread these announcements out so we can tell you a little bit about each band while we do it. As with all Radon shows, you can expect an eclectic lineup.

995383_1050092781716856_2313024483038022456_n.jpg

First up we’re really excited to bring in Keyoung, spoken word artist from Columbus OH. A favorite at Cornerstone and AudioFeed, Keyoung is working on a new album and we think the best way to describe what he does is to just watch the following video.

Also we’re excited to have Trouper come hang with us. From Mansfield, OH, Trouper describes their sound as Alternative Electropop Rock. They killed it last year at AudioFeed and we’re excited to bring to Springfield.

The Horse Show, just like most Radon shows, is a balanced mix of local artists and folks from out of town. So first up representing the Springfield area is The Locals. These indie rock guys are definitely becoming a pretty regular band to see on Radon lineups, but that’s just because they’re that good.

localspic

Also from Springfield is singer-songwriter Arlin Peebles of Studio Show fame. We’re excited to have him back once again for another Radon show.

And last up for this announcement is duo Bonnie and Lance. They’ve been playing our open mics and it just makes sense to have them around, especially as Bonnie is one of the mentors at Refuge Ranch. It’s great including artists from the Ranch itself in the show!

That’s all for now. Expect more announcements in the coming weeks! Look for the Horse Show facebook event here.

Horse Show 2014 Recap

11 Jul

We finally have time to sit down and write a little about all the great shows that just happened.

If you missed the announcement, the next Radon Lounge show is August 23rd, more details later.

The Horse Show that happened on June 21, 2014 was a success! People came and had fun, hence success!

AmyBenton

The day started off with David Lasley on the barn stage and soon both stages were in full force. Over 20 bands performed and there was never a dull moment.

BFree

One of our food vendors had to cancel last minute due to an untimely death in the family. We missed the gyros and falafel this year, but Dew’s Chili definitely brought some great food.

Dews

We tried to offer plenty to do all day long with the mondo croquet and volleyball, and it was really fun to watch the impromptu games of soccer and hula hooping.

mondocroquet

The horses were a big hit as always, Refuge Ranch is always happy to tell you their names and stories.

ranchhorse

Of the bands that performed, many were Radon Lounge veterans, and some were new to our scene. We were really blown away especially with new discoveries The Saudades and Narrow/Arrow.

Narrow/Arrow

We’re also excited that we got to feature new bands and artists discovered through Radon Cover Shows and Open Mics, such as Jordan Bauer, Anchored Souls, and Blind Social.

AnchoredSouls

The weather was mostly great throughout the day with some rain in the evening, which just served to cool everything down. Of course the stages were indoors, so it didn’t slow us down at all.

horseshowhula

The Soil & the Sun closed out the evening with a terrific set.

horseshowsats

The folks at Refuge Ranch had a great time hosting the event, as did we. We’re already putting plans together for Horse Show 2015.

We are very thankful for Refuge Ranch, our sound guys, artist food and hospitality specialists, and parking attendants.

Also big thanks to the Vine and the rest of our sponsors for making this event possible. There is a Vine show coming later this month, better check it out.

Kansas Bible Company wants to sell you some jams

15 May

The May 17th Radon show is almost here. We’re really excited to bring in Kansas Bible Company from Nashville, TN.

kbc-van_in_field-2400x1350

Kansas Bible Company

“The Kansas Bible Company is 12 man wrecking ball of sound featuring a five-man horn line, three guitars, two percussionists, one bass, and keys. Originally from Goshen, Indiana, they now reside in Nashville, Tennessee. They are a culture. To walk with them is to know them. They are on a journey – to the stars through rugged ways.”

This is by far the largest sized band we’ve fit into the Radon, it’s going to be a rocking night with plenty of dancing.

Also on the show is are local sweethearts Loomingplaying the Radon for the first time and will probably kick your butt with their infectious pop punk and Jess’ powerful voice.

Looming

Looming

And also on the show is Radon veteran Derrick Streibig. It’s been a little while since we’ve heard him, as he’s been fathering a brand new set of twins. He’s excited to come back and bring us another batch of sun-soaked mellow vibes. Here is a video of Derrick from his last Radon performance:

This is going to be a really fun show, plus it’s the first show back in the basement with our new baby. Music festival season starts next month, so there may not be another show back in Radon itself until August. This is going to be your only chance to soak it in for a while. Radon regulars might also notice a few tweaks to the basement, we’re hoping they’ll make the space feel a little more open.

Be sure to check out the facebook event page for this show here

Christmas Exploded

17 Dec

It was everywhere, there’s no getting the Christmas out of these clothes.

It was a legendary evening with so many fun happenings on literally multiple levels. People playing video games over a projector in the 2nd floor dormer. People munching on foods and chillin’ by the fire in the living room. People winning some sweet vinyl.

And of course the bands. Aaron Lee Martin and his 30 strings did a great job bringing the “sad bastard church music”, and Jess of Von Strantz ending the evening. Von Strantz was made up of local volunteers to create a band that was half Lovecow, 1 part oboe, and 1 part Jess Strantz. It was an amazing evening!

Here’s a wild cell phone clip of that madness!

Very soon we will be posting the first few 2014 shows!
